Of Awesome Impact: Coffee with Noloyiso #2018BOTY

Day 14 of 25 Days of Blogmas celebrating the best moments of the year 2018 #2018BOTY

The story @Nolo_yiso shared on her blog when she nominated me for an Awesome Impact Award (oh thank you for tagging me by the way)

A guest post by Noloyiso

If you were having coffee with me – well, I don’t have coffee in my matchbox. Maybe I would go out and buy coffee, you know, in the name of hospitality. Or maybe I would let you choose a tea. Tea is my preferencemy matchbox, my rules! There would be a cheese cake – a recipe I recently tried. I also prefer an adventure of the tongue, you see.

If you were having tea with me, we would talk, my Muse, about our daily struggles. I’ve been struggling lately and cannot understand the human selfish nature. We would find some ways to cope with the world we find ourselves in. Over a cup of tea, I would ask you about your life, about what gets you excited. What gets you out of bed every morning.

If you were having tea with me, I would ask you what you think this life is for. What is the point of all the difficulties and all the people we cross paths with. I would want to know what your take is on this. I would want to see if you are living the first half of your life or the second.

If you were having tea with me, I would be constantly checking how your cup of tea was compared to a cup of coffee. I would also share my very easy cheese cake recipe, because of I can make it, anyone can!

Of Backing Up Data: You are not an elephant #2018BOTY

Day 13 of 25 days of blogposts celebrating The Best Of The Year 2018 #2018BOTY

2018 has been quite a year, it begun as all years do with me saying this as I say at the beginning of every year; “This is it! This my year” as I said the year before that and the year before that and the year before that……

Sometimes life is just like that tough loving teacher who teaches you lessons you need learning and is not particularly concerned with being nice or fun about it.

I like to think I have a good head above my shoulders and a decent brain between my ears with a fairly good memory to remember all the genius ideas I have.

If I have learnt anything, its that I am not elephant. I need to start writing down my thoughts more and backing up everything.

One of my lowest points of the year, coming back from my uncle’s funeral to find out that while I was away;  my laptop grew legs

The laptop thief keep your work backed up

Its so hard to say goodbye; to all the unbacked up drafts which only existed on my laptop, all the thousands and thousands of words and memories which I can never get back.

grief and loss

Keep your valuables backed up, and not just to a local backup hard drive but also sign up for a cloud backup service; in the event of disaster you can get back the important bits and it wont quite feel like the end of the world.

So remember; you are not an elephant; back up your work and Jesus saves

Of #BlogIndabaWednesday : TeeMadzika #2018BOTY

So this and every Wednesday my blogging circle Blog Indaba The meeting place picks a blogger to crush on and hype them up all over the interwebs because blogging means community^_^

creative crush

The creative crush for this week is Teemadzika

Pretty much everything has been said before, I just tell it differently or at least I think I do.

Tafadzwa is A fan of all things life especially oxygen |Poet among other things|Foodie and he brings all these things together into a blog with a bit of everything where its always a quarter to quirky

I have been an avid follower of his blog watching it grow just like his hair ha! He thinks he has the good hair but between you and me mine is longer.

My favourite category on his blog is the Stories From An African Childhood

which is about, no prices for guessing the childhood shenanigans he got upto, some of it is relateable, in the way all most parents seem to be the same person and some of it will have you angling your head at an angle thinking to yourself are you for real?

Today is also day 12 of 12 days of festivities issa blogmas challenge; one blog post a day celebrating the best of 2018 hashtagged #2018BOTY

One of the things I am super pleased about this year is how people have found inspiration or been mused to explore their creative side and embrace the medium of writing as a means of self-expression

Its little things like that, finding out someone has also started their own blog because they read yours, or how a comment you make can sway’s someone’s decision; seeing how even the things you thought no one noticed can open up whole new worlds of possibilities….

I am a muse and a brand

Tafadzwa has a fiction series he is working on which can be found in the RANDOM PIECES OF WRITING category:

While we were discussing this story, he mentioned he wanted to do a sequel but didnt want to ruin it, cause well it was some darn fine story, I told him to go for it, and he did.  Its a remarkable feeling when someone who is good at what they do value your opinion like that.

Of The Band On My Hand #2018BOTY

Today is day 11 of 25 Days of Christmas, one post everyday celebrating the best of 2018 #2018BOTY

This year was should be the year I would have bought my best phone ever then even done an unboxing video and full on interactive review made for a VR Box in 360 degrees

but you know what they say

Man Plans, and God Laughs

Chess with God

A stranger in need decided their need for my laptop was greater than mine and that it would be better if they and not me possessed it. If only they had given me a warning then I would have backed up all the words that called my laptop home, and also my external hard drive.

And just when I was wondering what else could possibly go wrong, my phone decided to tap out, lights out, knock knock, no one is home.

A moment of silence to all the drafts you will never read

My current replacements are like those biscuit spare tyres that you are supposed only supposed to use until you get to the nearest tyre dealer and those are supposed to be a blogger’s best friends next to a whole lot of internet.

While I was writing this, I was busy trying to figure out what my best purchase for the year was and I have it. The best thing I bought cost me  fifty cent bond coin. I bought it from a lady who sold odd assortments, at an illegal fleamarket stall in downtown Harare.

A hair scrunchie thingie, I dont know its has a real name.

Initially she quoted me a ridiculous amount of money stressing how it was made of strong, durable, elastic material but as I walked away she kept dropping the price until she said;

“Just give me whatever you have.”

All I had, was a fifty cent coin and she said that was exactly enough for her busfare home and she would accept it, since business was slow and she had not sold a single item all day.

Its an interesting thing this elastic hairband thing (again what is the word for this stretchy oddity? Please help

I bought it at the beginning of the year and have worn it more as an arm ornament than as a hair securing device.

wearing elastic hair band as wristband

I really would not mind buying another exactly like this but the government cracked the whip on vendors after the Cholera outbreak in attempt to bring sanity in the streets, and have no way of finding the person who sold me this particular one. I have seen many others but they dont quite feel like this one does, some too stretchy others not stretchy enough; this one just right.

I have really long hair, and sometimes it gets all up in my face, or an errant strand brushes up on the nape of my neck, like some sinister serpent slithering around my neck and startling me; (I really do not like snakes I have a very rational fear that people get bitten and they die. Perfectly reasonable, possible, probable, & inevitable……) and still I wear my hair band as an armlet except for when I really need my hair tamed behind  my head like when cooking or eating especially burgers or brushing teeth  and other things

two strand twist rasta

Whats a hair band for but an excuse to simply flaunt your hair.

Of Coffee With Colour #2018BOTY

If you were having coffee with me, we would be hanging out with nothing more than a paint brush and a dream…….

I usually stay away from the news because it seems nothing good ever happens only violence, corruption, politricks, crime, inflation, disasters,  outbreaks, floods, droughts, war and death……..
You watch the news and you ask yourself so many questions; if nothing good ever happens

Then I saw this article:

“We want to add colour the city”

we want to add colour to the city
The Herald 17 November 2018

Its the story about a duo with a simple passion, “To Bring Colour Back To The City”  and remind people how amazing paint is…..

Calgraph Done differently

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that Marcus and Nyasha run CaliGraph; a new age advertising agency focusing on township media and meaningful design.

They use graffiti murals to beautify the city, adopting graffiti as medium of advertising, they are giving the city some colour and doing things differently through various collaborations.

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that their work resonates with me, I love art, I see the ugliness in the world and I try to paint over it with words;

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you that I had a quick chat with them, since I am fan of street art and the literal interpretation of bringing back the colour to the sunshine city by one mural at a time.

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you that, their favourite colour is gold;

“in everything we do we put the gold standard and in our opinion it is an inspirational colour”

They are willing to work and collaborate, to paint public spaces, to raise awareness and spread messages, colourful park benches, precast walls; if you let them, I bet they would paint even roads……

If you have an idea or space or just want to tell them you support their dream you can check out their website

Day 10 of my 25 days of festivities was about a news story that made my year #2018BOTY

Of Coffee With Mellow Creme #2018BOTY

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that its day 9 of my 25 days of festivities celebrating the Best Of The Year 2018 #2018BOTY

If you were having coffee with me, you would probably be able to guess that my best drink is, you guessed it coffee? Yes?

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that we are having Coffee With Mellow Creme which sounds like a fancy beverage but really you would have guessed wrong, unless you knew, then you would know.

Mellow Creme is a Zimbabwean hip hop artist and I was at a listening session of his upcoming album Theory of Nakedivity at the British Council Library Harare (after the library had closed for the day obviously and it was perfectly legit in case you were wondering so shout out to them for the space and supporting creatives)

Theory of nakedivity listening session
So happy to be hosting a listening session for @mellowcremelove new HipHop Soul album in our #Library as he prepares for the launch coming soon. Great mellow vibe with some good music

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you that I have a never been to listening session before, actually I have never heard of one until now, apparently they are a whole thing.

A listening session isnt an album launch, its like having beta readers giving you feedback on your project but in this case since its music, its your yet to be launched music played to an intimate gathering and as one explains thoughts behind each song, frame of mind and how each track came to be, before playing it and afterwards open up to questions, comments and suggestions.

nakedivity

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you I think its a very courageous  thing to do, its like sharing a picture of your soul and asking people for their honest thoughts

This album is the story of a man being honest about his feelings and experiences without fear of being judged

Theory Of Nakedivity
Mellow Creme

What if we all walked naked in this world? Without makeup, fancy clothes or material things that cover up our true selves, our ‘blemishes’. What if we had to tell the truth?

#Nakedivity Mellow Creme
Theory of nakedivity

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that Theory Of Nakedivity is a 9 track HipHop Soul Album delivered in Mellow’s unmistakable voice backed by crooning vocals alongside a live band which features Saxaphone music and even some mbira music in an afrofusion symphony. Its got that old school feel to it that Lauryn Hill Soul meets Hip Hop music

At 40 years old the album addresses Mellow’s everything; from insecurities at being too old to be chasing dreams and the hip hop game in Too Old For Love; the proverbial middle finger to those who did not believe in his dreams in Hakuna (no one.. like me) an African love affair for life forever in One Life Stand to the love for his wife, daughter and homies that he lost, in Hennesey By The lake.

The Theory of Nakedivity is his life story in music. Mellow at his most vulnerable

The Album is available on his site:

I think its something most artists should if they didnt already and I just didnt know about it, it helps people connect more with music the life and inspiration behind the words

As SoProfound put it; one doesnt just start by filling up stadiums one starts with small gatherings like THIS

If you were having coffee with Mellow Creme and I, I would tell you it was a fun experience and the crowd was good people…..

Of Mlilo The Dragon Braaimaster #2018BOTY

Hello I am Beaton and I am a dragon or rather I am the closest thing to a dragon you are going to read about today.

starting digital fires

If dragons were real, I would be a shape-shifter and I would turn into one, or at the very least dragons would be my spirit animal or Totem (or mutupo as its known in Shona language)

dragon patronus
dragon patronus

I imagine if you wanted to thank or praise and or simply flatter me you would chant a clan praise song exactly quite unlike this one

Introducing:

The first flame,
His most royal spontaneous combustor,
Consumer of all leaving nothing but ash,
Burner of things,
Bringer of light,
Chaser of darkness,
Giver of warmth
Keeper of secrets
Custodian of legends
And Teller of stories

I am not a dragon and neither are they our spirit animals but my totem is FIRE.

Yes, it’s a real thing, my totem (mutupo) is fire/Moto/Mlilo/Chauke and no its not common, most totems are animals and you are not supposed to eat your spirit animals lest you bring forth the wrath of your ancestors and your teeth fall out; it won’t rain and then top that with a whole lot of misfortune, which wont end, till you consult a traditional doctor and find a way to appease your ancestors.

I wish our totems served another purpose apart from being way to identify your kin and where you belong amongst strangers, like if you could shapeshift into it or command your animal patronus or in our case I could say “flame on” and conjure fire balls.

flame on

My spirit animal would totally barbecue your spirit animal:
Fire fascinates me, fire burns and all fires burn its something you learn for yourself

who needs the sun when the fire inside burns hot

Well, my spirit animal is fire and unlike the other totems we have no dietary restrictions in fact we love to celebrate our ancestry by having a jolly good braai and a good old fire cook out.

Whats a fire than a reason to have a barbecue?

Pig head in pot
Barbecue meat braai

Of Alone – Monogrenade and Titans#2018BOTY

I watch TV for research purposes and to discover new music…. thats my story and I am sticking to it ^_^

While watching an episode of Titans (a DC universe series based on DC Comics Team Titans) I caught the snippet of a song which I found hauntingly catchy.

Titans DC Comics

You know

How it feels

Alone

Alone

Fight for your life

Pray for the others

To die

You’re waiting for the others

To die

Alone

I think I want to listen the rest of that song, I decided there and then and pressed pause on the series so I could use SoundHound or Shazaam to identify the track.  It usually can tell you the artist and song with ease, but this time no such luck.

I even tried listening for a phrase which I could Google and hopefully track down the errand track but again no luck.

The only search results that remotely mentioned the song where from other internet users asking about the track from Episode 1 Season 1 of Titans  Robin is cleaning his suit.

Song playing on Titans Episode 1 season 1 Robin cleaning suit
Alone by Jean-MichelPigeon of the Band Monogrenade

I accepted the challenge that the internet gave me and applied my superb research skills to track down the track

Its as yet, unreleased, done on contract for the show…… and yes I got that direct from the artist of the band in question Jean-Michel Pigeon of Monogrenade, a francophone band based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

And this is how I came about the music that made my year. Monogrenade, I have been playing these guys as my background music

Of #BlogIndabaWednesdays: uBU #2018BOTY

Every Wednesday in one of my blogging circles Blog Indaba The meeting place we pick one blogger to crush on and hype them up all over the interwebs because blogging means community^_^

Blog Indaba

This Wednesday crush was uBu of Thought After Thought

ubu Thought after Thought
#BlogIndabaWednesdays

Nobuhle Nyoni was born to be uBu The Artist: Singer|Songwriter|Blogger

uBu ‘s blog is where she translates her Thought After Thought into Words. Love, fiction and deep thoughts in the category:

She “talks” fashion in the category:

and because

Visuals bring lessons to those willing to learn..

there’s the category

An empty stomach equals an angry someone.. A stagnant someone equals an empty life..

the reason for

I found my strength and I used it to succeed and I am often misunderstood, here is why..

Thus begins the category

She even has a category for people who have good things to say about her

uBu recently gave her site an overhaul and I love the new energy, how her blog feels and looks. She’s the one who schooled me on the use of buttons, in creating links function, which I will use to the death in this post. So if you reading this and wondering how was this done, its the button block that’s what it does !!!!!

Here’s an oldie goldie post ♥♥♥ and here’s to the journey to improving ourselves

uBu‘s also turns her thoughts into music, its something I never knew until quite recently and I am in awe, I have had her music on repeat ever since. A radio personality relation of mine walked in while I was listening to one of her tracks and casually mentioned “oh you listen to uBu, cool music” and I was left speechless her music plays on the radio; how did I never know?….

My day 5 post on the 25 days of blogging challenge that celebrates the best of the year 2018 #2018BOTY is a single by uBu, Ncosasa. I know it was released a year back but its the first track on this December’s playlist.

She also has new music out do check it out and also other posts from the blog indaba fam
